We decided to go to Topsail Beach (part of the Outer Banks in North Carolina) as our first vacation just me and him. We had been talking about getting engaged for awhile, but he told me that in order to afford the vacation he had to spend all his money, even the ring fund. This should have been an obvious giveaway to any woman, but he had been so open about proposing before that I didn't see any reason not to believe him.
We stayed in a tent. Yes, a tent. At the beach. In late July. It would be easily over 100 degrees in the tent during the day and nearly 100 outside. It was miserable. Crazy thing is, I would do it again in a heart beat! We had so much fun. We even had a mini-fridge in there!
Before I go much further, let me say that I LOVE sea turtles. We've had an inside joke going for years about "Save Earl", who is a sea turtle Jesse drew randomly one day. It grew into something larger than either of us expected. When we went to the beach, Jesse took me to the sea turtle hospital. Top Sail is basically known for their sea turtle sanctuary. They were closed that day, but luckily they still had some stuff sitting out so Jesse and I got these gems of pictures:
Then one day on the beach, Jesse built this amazing sand-turtle of Earl. Earl Jr can be seen in the lower left corner of the picture.
Since we're on the subject of sea turtles, we posed with the one sitting outside the Topsail Trading Co.
We actually posed with many things. Here's the gigantic shark outside of Waves:
While we were out, Jesse bought me a jewelry kit in which you opened up an oyster to pull out a pearl! Yes, I pulled out my own pearl out of an oyster! It came with a perfect cage in the shape of a (you guessed it) sea turtle.

Then came the faithful day when he decided it was time for him to surprise me.
When the sun was sitting, we lounged back in the sand to watch the waves.
Then he randomly said, "Don't look. I'm going to draw you a picture." I laughed and thought to myself that it was going to be a sea turtle, since that was the theme of the trip.
It was a sea turtle, all right. And next to the sea turtle it said "Earl" and below it said "Will you marry me?" So me being as spacey as I am, started to laugh because I thought "Earl, will you marry me? Hahaha! He's making a joke about the sea turtle!" Then I realized...no...not the turtle...me...what?! I looked up to see him down on one knee holding my ring. It took him a few minutes to convince me he wasn't playing a trick on me (he does like to do that sort of thing, after all). And then I said yes!
"She said YES!"
A few days later, we left the beach. We returned on our honeymoon. We didn't camp that time, though.
On our way home, he stopped and bought me a rose. Isn't he the sweetest?
It was one of the most amazing trips of my life. Except for my feet swelling up. Did I not mention that? They were the size of a loaf of bread.
Gross, right?
Aww so sweet! Thanks for sharing
